Galen D. Powers

In Memoriam

1936-2010

Galen D. Powers was the senior founder of the firm. In the 1970s, while in government service, he received a personal commendation from the President of the United States and Superior and Distinguished Service awards from successive US Secretaries of Health, Education, and Welfare. He was also at that time selected by a committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall as one of the three outstanding young lawyers in the federal government. In 1977, he became the first Chief Counsel for the Health Care Financing Administration (now Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), which administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Two years later, he entered the private practice of law, and in 1985 he was selected by the National Law Journal as one of the most prominent health care lawyers in the United States.

Mr. Powers served as a director and member of the Audit Committee and Chairman of the Compliance Committee of MedCath, a public company, and as a director and Chairman of the Compliance Committee of Health Management Systems, Inc., another public company, and as a director of several private companies in the health care field.  He was a widely published author on health care legal, financing and policy matters.

Mr. Powers was listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2005-2010 editions) and Who's Who in American Law. Since entering private practice, he was involved solely in health care legal and policy issues.
