Powers Pyles Hosts Transplant Compliance and Cost Recovery Seminar

A Legal Briefing Audio Seminar
June 11, 2009

On June 11, 2009, PPSV hosted an audio conference entitled, “Transplant Compliance and Cost Recovery.”  Organ acquisition costs are among the few remaining areas of Medicare reasonable cost reimbursement and are facing increased scrutiny by Medicare intermediaries and the Office of Inspector General.  It is critical for transplant centers to adopt effective and compliant policies and procedures to ensure that they are properly recovering the organ acquisition costs to which they are entitled. In addition, transplant center relationships with physicians, OPOs, laboratories, and suppliers may raise legal concerns. This program was targeted to the unique issues facing transplant centers, including:

  • an in-depth discussion of the Medicare rules regarding allowable organ acquisition costs, highlighting areas of potential cost recovery and compliance risk
  • review of how the federal fraud and abuse laws impact the operations of transplant centers and strategies to improve compliance
  • new Medicare certification standards for transplant centers and guidance on survey preparation, plans of correction, and pursuing appeals.
