The new HIPAA privacy rules published July 8th by HHS indicate a new direction in enforcement policy for protection and breaches of protected health information (PHI). They also strengthen and expand the enforcement environment for both covered entities and business associates.
This webinar summarized the new regulatory requirements and provided a list of practical steps to take to reduce or mitigate liability under the new laws and tips on resources that covered entities and business associates should have ready in order to respond immediately to alleged violations. Under the new rules, conscious or intentional lack of knowledge of new privacy requirements is part of the definition of “willful neglect” that can lead to high civil monetary penalties.
